QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Dr Catherine Nixon
UKCP Registered Psychotherapist & Psychotherapeutic Counsellor
As a psychotherapist and counsellor I aim to help you gain a better understanding of yourself and others and to help you identify and work towards things that you want to change. I offer a safe and confidential space for you to explore the issues you are struggling with. My approach is integrative which means I draw on various therapeutic models and techniques relevant to my clients' needs. I work with my clients collaboratively and sensitively on issues that have been triggered by recent events or issues that are long-standing.
For the last six years I have worked with clients in primary care, bereavement support services and private practice, providing long-term and short-term therapy to adults. Prior to my current therapeutic work I spent several years completing my PhD research on sexualities and sexual identity and have been involved in academic research related to 'Self' and 'identity' for over fifteen years. For more information see my research page.
I believe that the therapeutic relationship is central to the work that we do in psychotherapy and counselling and I offer an initial session so that - in addition to understanding my clients' needs more fully - my clients have an opportunity to meet me and decide if I am the right therapist for them.
I trained and qualified as a psychotherapist and psychotherapeutic counsellor at The Northern Guild For Psychotherapy & Counselling in Newcastle, UK. I'm a registered member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and the UKCP Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy College (HIPC).
I am an Anxiety UK Approved Therapist providing therapeutic support to the charity’s members and partner beneficiaries. I am subject to Anxiety UK’s regular monitoring of my professional qualifications, supervision, continual professional development, insurance and professional body membership in addition to complying with the ethical framework and professional standards set down by my registered governing body. You can follow these links for more information on the Anxiety UK Approved Therapist scheme and on becoming a member of Anxiety UK to be able to access therapy via the charity.
